Hear for yourself the influence of Zen in Haiku, Haiga and Butoh.

“What is the relevance of Zen to Haiku? … Zen and haiku are about finding one’s way to what is known as haiku ‘spirit’. Zen was present at the very moment haiku came into being. Haiku was Zen in inspiration. … What is the relevance of Zen to haiku today, more than 350 years later? In one word it is discipline. The discipline of self. The discipline to quiet the chatter of our minds. The discipline to see things as they are, as they exist in this Eternal Now.” This is an excerpt of a much longer article by Jacqui Murray, April 2008 that can be found at - /Zen%20and%20haiku%20jacqui%20murray.pdf

Open mike is open to all forms of poetry! But it’d be great to hear your haiku if you do!

“Haiku.. as dynamic in the manner of a single frame of thought.. the flash itself, immeasurable in any time whatever: no time manifesting in time. So the movement of the haiku could be said not to move but to be, totally movement. That movement which because it is not relative, is inseparable from stillness

WA Workshop

On Monday 1st September 2008, during National Poetry Week 2008, I was fortunate to attend a Haiku Workshop organised by the City of Perth Library, and held in the Library in Hay Street, Perth.

The workshop was skilfully presented by Maureen Sexton. Maureen is the WA Regional Representative for HaikuOz, the Secretary of WA Poets Inc, and has been published both in Australia and abroad.

The 2 hour workshop was one of several events organised by the City of Perth Library. The other events included a Haiku Competition, a Haiku Display and two Poetry Sessions with local poets. The winners of the Haiku Competition were announced the morning of the workshop.

We enjoyed an interesting and informative introduction to Haiku. We listened with enthusiasm as we learnt about its history and pioneers.

Maureen explained the difference between Japanese language Haiku and English language Haiku, and discussed Australian Haiku.

We learnt that in Haiku, more is less! To be concise and capture the moment... one single moment in time.

Our ears unwrapped the Haiku read to us... discovering with joy, the many layers of meaning hidden in simple words.

We practised the art of mastering the elusive Haiku moment... That "AHA", penny drops moment, where we see the big picture... the final layer of the Haiku.

The group showed great talent, with many writers infusing their work with rich images, simplicity, yet depth.

In attendance, amongst others, were Enis Pearce, June Earle, Donna Wood, Anne Dyson, Natasha Adams & Liz.

We were delighted to receive practical advice to get published in Australia and overseas.

We also had the pleasure of meeting Mr Yuichi Takatsuka, from the Consulate-General of Japan, who was one of the judges of the Haiku Competition this year. The Consulate-General of Japan have provided the judges for all the Haiku Competitions organised by the City of Perth Library since 2005. The winners in 2008 were: 1st Cassidy Marino WA, 2nd David Terelinck NSW, 3rd Mark Brenzi WA.

Haiku Competition and Haiku Wall Review 2005-06

Maureen Sexton, Chairperson 2006 WA Spring Poetry Festival, Co-Chairperson WA Poets Inc see www.thewordisout.net sent HaikuOz the following report

Haiku Competition and Haiku Wall Review 2005-2006

City of Perth Library conducted a Haiku poetry competition which generated interest from around the state with entries ranging from Tom Price to Margaret River. Enquiries were received from people not normally involved with the Library. The amount of interest created by the Spring Poetry Festival organizers was impressive.
The Haiku wall created in the Library Lounge included all entries. Competition results were posted on the Library web page and provided to the Japanese Consulate (judges and donors of prizes) and the Spring Poetry Festival. Prizewinners were contacted and most called in promptly to collect their prizes and certificate. Certificates were posted to Tom Price High School and St. Anthony’s School in Greenmount in acknowledgement of their numerous entries.
Assessment of the Haiku competition indicates a repeat next year would be worthwhile.
